How often do you catch yourself saying: „I just need financial stability first“ whenever it comes to living your dream?
I’ve been hearing this a lot from my clients, and for me as a self-employed free spirit myself, it hits close to home too. The idea of having a safety net before pursuing our dreams can hold us back, keeping us for example stuck in jobs we’re not passionate about and behaviours we are not proud of. It’s like this invisible barrier that keeps us from chasing our passions and taking courageous action.
And don’t get me wrong, smart financial choices are crucial. We’ve got bills to pay and responsibilities to take care of. And I am not going to invite you to recklessly jump without anything to catch you.
But here is the thing that I wish I had understood sooner and that I keep on reminding myself and my clients:
Our sense of safety does not lie in our bank accounts. It is a sensation within our bodies that is provoked by a relaxed nervous system. It is WITHIN US and has NOTHING to do with money.
The sooner you understand this with your entire body, the more easeful it will become to walk towards your dreams – financial ones or regarding your dream work: Your safety is in fact not coupled with your finances.
So the key is not to wait for the money to come for us to feel stable but to learn to regulate our nervous systems and take back the ownership over our sense of security.
That way you won’t depend on your bank account balance anymore to feel safe.
And guess when you are more likely to make good decisions, take courageous action and experience joy in the meantime? Exactly: when your nervous system is in a state of relaxation and safety vs. stress and fear.
So here is my suggestion for you:
The next time you notice that you are getting stressed about your balance, taxes, bills that are piling up, or an investment that you are pondering,…
instead of this:
🙉 Procrastinating
🙈 Netflixing
🙊 Eating
(Or any other coping strategy you have developed)
Try this:
🙃 Have a look around in your room using the full movement range of eyes and neck
🤩 Tap your neck up and down
🤗 Gently stroke your arms, legs and any other part of your body while taking a couple of deep breaths
😛 Shake off your body for 3 minutes.
And then observe what you are noticing is different after.
